CHAKWERA'S ECONOMIC PLAN FOR CHANGE
President Lazarus Chakwera unveiled the curtailing all his travels plans until March next year as one way of improving the economy. He announces that he will not attend the 28th United Nations Conference of Parties on climate change and environment (CoP28) in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates later this month.
The President has ordered all Cabinet members currently abroad on public-funded trips to return home with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, the President also said he has ordered the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola Banda to include provisions in the upcoming Mid-Term Budget Review for cushioning small and medium enterprises (SMEs) so that “we can protect the jobs that they create”.
Chakwera has also ordered the Minister of Finance to also include in that Mid-Year Budget Review provisions for a reasonable wage increase for civil servants.

STUDENTS SHOWCASING PASSION FOR FOOD PRODUCTION
In a celebration of their
studies and passion for food production, students at Phwezi Women’s College in
Rumphi launched a new T- shirt design that showcase their dedication to the field.
The launch event took
place at the campus where students gathered to learn more about the inspiration
behind it.
The T-shirt features a
graphic of a spoon and a folk (cutlery), crockery and a double-breasted chef
jacket. The students had an opportunity to share their insights on the future
of food production.
Phwezi Women’s college
offers different courses like Food Production, Brick Laying, General Fitting, Tailoring and Designing and many others.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT OF INTERNET TO MALAWIANS
Internet
is one of the common channels of communication here in Malawi. The advancement
of technology and the internet has transformed the way of life of Malawians in
terms of access to information, business activities, academic issues and many
others.
The
internet has also improved the education sector in such a way that students are
able to access information and other educational materials easily through Google,
Opera, Chart GPT and many more.
Zithembire
Shaba, a student at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences
(MUBAS) says the internet offers information in different kinds, for example,
text, audio, video, images, charts which are easily understood other than
reading books only.
She
further says, the internet offers links that help them to access more
information and other related information on a certain topic.
The
internet
also help business individuals to sell there products online.
Annes Phiri, one of the business individuals says internet has helped her to
reach mass audience from different districts within Malawi.
“Once
I display my products on the internet, a lot of customers place orders hence expanding
the customers base beyond our local communities,” Phiri says.
She
further says, the internet makes her to communication easily with customers, she
is able to send products from Nsanje to Chitipa through the internet.
Although
the internet has altered the way people access information and other
activities, it has contributed to negative factors that has led to arrest, job
loss, stress, conflict, laziness and loss of trust.
The
internet has also limit other individuals from accessing information due to lack
of technical skills, money to buy internet bundles, access to technological
devices such smartphones and Laptops.
Juliah
Seyani, a Malawian citizen explains that most of the stories and information
posted through social media is fake.
“I have lost trust in online purchasing
because what we see on the post is totally different from what we get in terms
of quality of the product,” Seyani says.
Reacting
to the matter concerning academic purposes, MUBAS introduces a software called “Turnitin”
to control plagiarism as most of the students were coping ideas directly from
the internet and paste them on their assignments and project.

COMMUNITY BENEFITING FROM BYPASS ROADS

Malawi government showing its interest in this
bypass roads has brought gratitude to the road users.
Kanjedza-Chinyonga bypass road is one of the
roads which is being constructed to ease the congestion in the highway.
Fortune Kafuzira a student at the Malawi
University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) residing in private hostels
in Chinyonga express his gratitude over the new road constructed.
“As a student I have benefited because now I
can reach the campus without any traffic jams,” Kafuzira says.
He further says the problem of missing morning
classes because of long queue is now solved."
Gabriel M’dyamizu, a minibus driver expresses
his satisfaction over the newly constructed road as he is able to use shortcut
to connect with highway from Chichiri to Limbe.
“Nowadays we can reach passengers in time
because this by pass roads are shorter than using highway,” M’dyamizu says.
He added that passengers are increasing because
some people live near the road like MUBAS students hence making more profits
than before.
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jacob Hara
says the roads constructed should withstand all weather patterns.
He further says government is engaging
engineers to come up with designs that will situate where the bypass road will
be meeting a main road.
